What's Actually on the Test

Three sections. Verbal, quantitative, analytical writing.

Verbal is the one that catches people off guard. Vocabulary in context, sentence completion, reading comprehension — but the vocabulary level goes way past normal academic English. Plenty of candidates who did well throughout undergrad still struggle with GRE verbal specifically. Has nothing to do with intelligence. It's just vocabulary most people simply haven't encountered before — academic and formal English that doesn't come up in everyday reading or even most undergraduate coursework.

Quantitative is arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis. Roughly FSc or A Level difficulty. Engineering and science students usually find this manageable with some review. Business and humanities students sometimes need to relearn math they haven't touched since undergrad — not because it's hard, just rusty.

Analytical writing needs two essays. One analyzing an issue, one analyzing an argument. Most candidates barely prepare for this section and focus everything on verbal and quant. That's a mistake. A weak writing score drags down an otherwise strong application more than people expect.

Vocabulary — Where Most Pakistani Candidates Struggle Most

This is the section that takes the longest to fix. Pakistani undergraduate education tends to focus on subject content over broad English reading, so GRE vocabulary — which assumes exposure to that kind of reading — hits differently for a lot of candidates here.

Flashcards work for some people. Word lists too, to an extent. But context matters more than most people think. Learning a word from a sentence completion question sticks better than memorizing a definition in isolation. This isn't something you fix in two weeks. Sustained practice over months works. Cramming close to the test date doesn't.

Deciding Between GRE and Other Tests

A lot of Pakistani candidates aren't fully locked into GRE specifically when they start researching — they're weighing multiple options depending on what they're actually applying for.

If business school is the target and nothing else, GMAT is the more traditional route — business-specific, and some schools still prefer it over GRE even though acceptance of either is growing. GRE keeps things flexible if plans might shift toward non-business programs later.

If English proficiency is still a gap — which it is for most Pakistani candidates whose undergrad wasn't English-medium — IELTS is almost always required alongside GRE for programs abroad. This one catches people off guard regularly. Months of GRE prep and then realizing IELTS is a separate requirement entirely.

If studying abroad isn't fully decided yet and staying in Pakistan is still on the table, GAT covers graduate admission locally — a genuinely different test, NTS-administered, worth knowing about as a backup rather than committing entirely to one path too early.

For candidates whose undergrad was engineering and considering whether to stay local for further study, ECAT prep material stays relevant as reference even at graduate level, since the foundational physics and maths overlap continues to matter.

Medical and health science graduate tracks sometimes connect back to MCAT preparation for candidates whose longer-term plans include medical school internationally rather than a purely non-medical graduate degree.

And for candidates specifically eyeing undergraduate-level study abroad instead of graduate — a different stage entirely — ACT is the relevant test rather than GRE, worth checking if the actual target is undergrad admission rather than graduate.

How long does GRE vocabulary prep actually take? Realistically two to three months if you're starting from zero. Some candidates try to cram it into the last few weeks and it just doesn't stick the same way — vocabulary needs repetition spread out over time, not one intense push right before the exam.
